The Basics

There are 3 basic steps – Increase Rings, Decrease Rings, Splice Rings – to constructing with the Chain and Scale Maille from Foam Armory.

How to extend or splice the row:

  • Overlap the green sections, the ends of the old and new strands
  • Treat them as one ring, and continue your weave
  • For starting a project, it may be easier to build a few rows, and then extend them to the desired length

How to make the next row smaller or decrease rings:

  • Overlap the two red rings and insert it into the blue ring on the next row
  • Decreases are best done in the middle of the project row
  • You can decrease multiple times on one row for dramatic shape changes

How to make the next row larger or increase rings:

  • Stretch out the orange rings so there is some extra space
  • Next row, skip the purple ring, this will add a ring to the row
  • Increase are best done in the middle of the project row
  • You can increase multiple times on one row for dramatic shape changes

Hello! You do the same thing for the Scalemaille. The only difference is you may want to remove one of the “scales” where it overlaps, but keep the rings. If you have any other questions, please email me at autumn@foamarmory.com and I can send a more detailed explanation!
